Hidden Agenda presented the highly anticipated inaugural LOL Comedy Honors August 24, 2017 in New York, New York and it was nothing short of amazing!  We have the Grammys, Oscars, Emmys, SAG Awards etc., but never in the history of comedy have comedians had a night just for us.  Everything about the awards from its conception to production stayed true to the core and foundation of the comedy culture.

The original venue was Grand Prospect Hall in Brooklyn but due to unforeseen circumstances the venue was changed to the Alhambra Ballroom in Harlem just days before the awards was scheduled.  Comedy veteran Bill Bellamy hosted and did an amazing job.  The red carpet ushered in the who’s who of comedy from social media influencers to comedic icons such as: Juhahn Jones, Vena E. also known as Pretty VEE, Jon Laster, Lil’ Rel, Guy Torry, Joe Torry, Adele Givens, Gina Yashere, D.L. Hughley, Luenell, Paul Mooney, Marsha Warfield and so many more!

I had the opportunity to speak with LOL Comedy Honors council member Cocoa Brown and when asked why it was important for her to be at the awards she stated because “there’s so many comedians that you don’t know of, that’ll be in these streets grinding and making you laugh and forget about your problems for a long time and they need to be honored and recognized.”  Talent Da Comedian’s goal for the awards was for “people to show up and believe in it.”  He suggested that a council be created to make sure the honors and awards were distributed as they should to people with a documented and verifiable body of work.  The Ray Murphy Memorial, Robin Harris Legend, and Bernie Mac Comedy King of the Year awards (to name a few) were selected and presented by the families of the late Ray Murphy, Robin Harris and Bernie Mac.

The special tributes were the most emotional parts of the evening and inspired everyone in the house.  My personal favorite tributes were to the Queens of Comedy and the memoriam to all the fallen comics that paved the way for comedians of the past, present, and future.  Nipsey Russell, Lawanda Page, Red Foxx, Charlie Murphy, Robin Williams, Richard Pryor and Dick Gregory were some of the many great talents included and I am certain they would’ve have been proud to see this auspicious event take place.  I am looking forward to the second, third and twenty fifth LOL Comedy Honors as it was an epic night for me as a comedian too.
