DTLR Community: Our Third Annual Trip to Selma

When you think of DTLR, what comes to mind? Sneakers? Streetwear? That’s understandable – but it’s just the tip of the iceberg…

We take pride in bringing you the hottest gear year in and year out. But we’re even more proud of the work that we do to uplift, educate, and inspire members of the communities that we serve. Our name, DTLR, is an acronym for “Dare to Live Right,” which is the banner for our community outreach efforts. The “Dare to Live Right” movement can be broken down into five pillars: community, voting, education, health, and activism – the last of which was the focus of our most recent event.

This month, DTLR and NAACP sponsored a trip for 150 students from several Atlanta metro-area schools to travel to Selma, Alabama, in memory of the 58th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, a milestone in the civil rights movement. During the trip, students marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, a National Historic Landmark, visited the Rosa Parks monument and saw the homes of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Ralph D. Abernathy, and Nat King Cole.

The annual trip to Selma is an opportunity to empower and educate students of all ethnic backgrounds to respect and appreciate the power of their votes. Additionally, the students marched alongside dozens of organizations and had an opportunity to hear the commemorative speech of President Joe Biden.

This event is a continuation of our nationwide Mission 1865 campaign, which is inspired by the year that the 13th Amendment was passed and ratified by Congress to abolish slavery. Mission 1865 provides opportunities and experiences for students and communities to learn about and celebrate African American history and culture.
