In certain parts of the world, it seems as if winter will never go away…. thus meaning that the thought of summer is seemingly a joke. In the world of hip-hop, summer is usually the best time of the year: great weather, rooftop events, day parties, the beach, pool parties, etc. Every artist wants to be a part of the soundtrack to the summer. While the summer hasn’t begun quite yet, there are some early indications of who could be leading the charge.

With the Carters going on tour, it’s safe to say we are getting some new music from them. Even if not, their tour will undoubtedly be the biggest one of the summer season. Speaking of biggest, Drake has been the biggest star so far this spring. He had two consecutive #1 debuts on the Billboard 100, making him only the fourth artist to have multiple singles debut at the summit of the chart, following Justin Beiber, Britney Spears, and Mariah Carey. He also becomes the first artist to replace himself at #1 on the chart since Taylor Swift in 2015. His album is due out in June.

Speaking of the 6 God, his former rival, Meek Mill, is finally home! After 5 months in prison, new music will surely be dropping. There’s also rumored to be new music coming from Nas this summer. And of course, Kanye West has spoken from the “sunken place” and it seems G.O.O.D Music will be dropping music the entire month of June and at the end of May:

  • May 25th -Pusha T
  • June 1st -Kanye Album
  • June 8th -Kanye & Kid Cudi joint album (yes they made up)
  • June 22nd -Teyana Taylor

In addition, Nicki Minaj has teased new music with two new recent singles. Whether a summer release is to come remains uncertain. It remains to be seen if Cardi B’s track record of success continues to reign into the summer as she not only has the #1 album in the country but also has strung another top ten single with, “I Like It”, which could become this summer’s anthem. And then there’s J. Cole. Summertime hasn’t been Cole in quite some time, but with the critical and commercial acclaim surrounding his recent release, “KOD”, and a jab at Lil’ Pump on the album’s closer, it’s assumed we will hear a lot from him this summer.

So who wins the Battle of Summer? It remains to be seen. My pick is Drake, but who do you think? Drop your comments in the section below.
