Movies To Watch: Mortal Kombat (2021)

Before at-home consoles cornered the gaming market, you had to travel to an establishment to experience it. Also known as an arcade. The ’90s was the last impactful era to usher in classic titles like Street Fighter, Killer Instinct, and Mortal Kombat. Despite the trend of pixel animation being used for Street Fighter and Killer Instinct, Mortal Kombat used actual mortals to create such moves on screen. This innovative way of gaming put MK in a league of its own amongst avid players. Turning quarters into tokens, I stood in line with anticipation to get on the joysticks and give it a go. After playing, you’ll know immediately if this style is your cup of tea or not.

In 1995, the world was slipping away as the full-length movie “Mortal Kombat” made its debut in theatre worldwide. Gamers who cherished the powerful characters and compelling storylines were pleased with the film. After a successful launch, producers came with a second installment titled, “Mortal Kombat: Annihilation” which stunk in the box office. Despite the fans that have kept the franchise going by continuously supporting the game releases, a movie hasn’t come out since.

25 years after the original picture, Mortal Kombat has made a comeback for the new generation and fanatics alike. The story is centered around the character Cole Young, who is a struggling MMA fighter who gets beat up for under-the-table cash. By unknowingly being the relative of Bi-Han (aka Scorpion) and having the dragon crest on his body, he is automatically chosen for Mortal Kombat. Looking for answers, Cole Young is in dying need to find the world’s greatest champions (with the same dragon crest) to stand strong against enemies of the outworld looking to take over Earth. In a high-stakes battle for the universe, Cole Young along with notables like Jax, Sonya Blade, Lui Kang, and Lord Raiden defends Earth from Shang Tsung, Sub-Zero, Kano, and others looking to takeover.

If you a lifelong gamer or a casual fan of the franchise, this is a movie that is filled with excruciating fatalities and flawless victories. Comment below did the movie Mortal Kombat live up to the hype or not?
