Cardi B And Bruno Mars “Please Me” Review

The dynamic duo hit the studio for a hot and steamy new record.

When they first dropped the “Finesse” remix last year, fans and critics alike were blown away at the dynamic chemistry that exists between rap’s newest icon and pop’s biggest performer. Bruno Mars and Cardi B have a dynamic chemistry that is unrivaled in music, similar to that of Drake and Rihanna earlier this decade. There is something universal about the pairing that makes them a delight as they come across your ears.

Cardi B’s mass appeal has taken the world by storm in a matter of 15 months. She has shattered records, sales expectations, and most recently, award shows. She became the first female rap artist to have 2 #1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and recently became the first female solo artist to win Best Rap Album at the Grammy Awards. Mars is far from shabby himself. He’s racked up an impressive 8 #1 singles thus far on the Billboard Hot 100 and took home the award for Album of the Year at the 2018 Grammy Awards.

While their 2018 collaboration sounded like a bop straight out of 1980’s new jack swing, “Please Me” is a sexy collaboration that melodically combines the strengths of both artists and displays both in a light they previously haven’t explored successfully before. For Mars, he continues his recent wave of crossover tunes with rappers, that has yet to skyrocket into top tier of Billboard. For Cardi, it is a large success with a singer that compliments her swagger that both strokes her ego and pushes her beyond her limits.

The single is a teaser of forthcoming music from Cardi, scheduled to come in time for the summer. With seductive flirts of guitar and Bruno effortlessly cooing “please me baby/turn around and tease me”, his requests are a reminder of how dominant Jodeci was in R&B; they are also mentioned in Cardi’s verse. For Cardi, she finds a perfect blend of her flow and dynamic lyricism to plead her case with the cocky, “do my back like I do these records and break that shit”.

The single is off to a monstrous start, debuting at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 this past week. However, if radio and digital trends are any indication, don’t be surprised if the title rises and claims the top position of the Hot 100. Whether it does or doesn’t, it won’t be denied that both stars have a massive hit on their hands that could set the tone for even more collaborations to come for each of them. If that’s the case, please us…don’t tease us.
