“The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet.” – Aristotle
On Wednesday, February 13th, DTLR VILLA took some time to reward students at John Hayden Johnson Middle School in Southeast DC, for their stellar academic achievements.
After clamoring around in the school cafeteria, 40 students gathered into the schools library for a moment of special recognition. It was time for the Honor Roll ceremony! The scholars were comprised of 6th, 7th and 8th graders, all whom, at the midway mark, averaged and maintained GPA’s between 3.5 and 3.8.
As the honorary attendees entered the room, they were greeted by their principal and teachers. As a special surprise, Councilman Trayon White, of Ward 8, shared some words of encouragement and celebrated their academic achievement with them. Our very own Community Outreach Coordinator Anthony Williams was also in attendance to award each student with a DTLR VILLA gift card, which was right on time, since this was the week this group of students were able to dress down!
“Education must not simply teach work, it much teach life.” – Du Bois
To see the smiles on these scholars faces and joy in their eyes, after they spent an afternoon celebrating their achievements, only emphasizes the mission of the DTLR VILLA Community Outreach Department. It’s more than just handing out high fives and gift cards, its about instilling the message in our youth that as you continuously achieve it is still important to comeback and giveback. It is important to be the best you and then assist your peers in finding the best in them! We continuously challenge the next generation to #DareToLiveRight!
